Payment gateways and creditcard processing in 2015
YMany ecommerce web sites (which provide hosting and shoppingcart integration) offer a merchant services. Generally speaking with the click of the button another merchant can be installed.
Merchant fees start at 1.99% + $0.30 per transaction, but all kind of "whatever" fees will apply and might make the real cost 3.5% - 8.5%. Work with merchants which have an exact fee, preferably with Amex fees included. Companies like Stripe and Paypal might offer a flat fee of 2.25% or 2.2% for all transactions. When you process too much Amex to their liking expect and increase to 3.5% for Amex fees. Note: you can call Amex and get a code which you can provide to the merchant to get a lower rate for amex: 2.89%.
Google Check was a Google payment product which was discontinued in 2013.
Google Checkout
A payment and shopping cart solutions for buyers and seller. You
can pay and receive money with just using your Google/ Gmail account and
a password.
This is what Google quotes:
"Google Checkout helps you increase sales.
And process them for free when you advertise with Google."
cc
"Every online merchant has two goals: sell more and spend less.
Google Checkout™ is a new way to process transactions that
helps you achieve both. Google Checkout works with Google's search advertising
program, AdWords, to increase your sales and minimize your expenses
throughout the online sales and marketing process. "
Google Checkout Fees
The transaction processing for Google Checkout are 2%
plus $.20 per transaction.
For every $1 you spend on AdWords, you can process $10 in sales for
free through Google Checkout. For example, if you spent $1,000 on
AdWords last month, this month you can process $10,000 in sales at
no cost. The more you spend to promote your business through AdWords,
the more you save on transaction processing fees with Google Checkout.

Checkout Reviews
Personally I have been not too impressed about finding anybody at
Google to help me. Let me know when you find any email or phone
number for the Customer Services Department.
The Button, which look I do not like, is easy to implement. But
when I want to reproduce a button with the Google Checkout, I have
to create the button from scratch.
Using Paypal: I can recreate a button/ page within seconds.

Paypal Shoppingcart is a ecommerce solution to
get started online. Paypal Shopping cart and merchant was a great tool to get started or even grow to 100+ products. However Paypal currently barely supports/ improves their shoppingcart. Paypal main focus is to process credit cards for merchants.
Paypal Rates: $0.30 + 2.9% ($0- $3000 monthly sales)
The advantages of Paypal are:
- Paypal is easy to implement
- Shoppingcart processed on Paypal server, which means no heavy
web host package is needed
- No monthly fees
- Competitive Rates per transaction ($0.30 + 2.9% - above $10.000
montly = $0.30 + 2.2%)
- Paypal member payments and all credit card payments accepted
(without signing up)
The disadvantage of Paypal are:
- Rates are not very competitive
- Shopping cart options are limited and not weel supported anymore
- Service is not excelent
- Many customers still assume they have to signup with Paypal,
which might conclude to a "non-sale"
Mailing Lists
Long term success for an (online) business is optimizing
the sales to current customers instead of trying to get new customers
(more expensive) again and again. Sending an monthly newsletter,
Sales/ specials updates via email will be a successful way to generate
more cash flow without spending a lot.
